This month, two American Battle Monuments Commission’s sites, Cambridge American Cemetery, located in the U.K., and Luxembourg American Cemetery, located in Luxembourg, received awards from Tripadvisor, recognizing the American Battle Monuments Commission’s sites as great places to visit according to travelers’ reviews.

“It is a great opportunity for American Battle Monuments Commission’s sites to be part of that top 10% of listings worldwide,” says Karen Wurzburger, chief of Visitor Services & Interpretation at American Battle Monuments Commission. “It enables our sites to be showcased and recognized across the world and be even more noticed by travelers. It also highlights the quality of the work our teams do every day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

The Travelers’ Choice Awards take into account the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings, and rank the best things to do in specific categories and geographic areas, as rated and reviewed by travelers.

Every year, Tripadvisor recognizes travelers’ favorite businesses around the world, based on reviews and ratings collected over 12 months. Cambridge American Cemetery and Luxembourg American Cemetery were part of this list.

Cambridge American Cemetery was donated by the University of Cambridge. It lies on a slope with the west and south sides framed by woodland. The cemetery contains the remains of approximately 3,800 U.S. service members. Another approximately 5,100 names are recorded on its Walls of the Missing. It is the only cemetery in the U.K. dedicated to honoring fallen Americans who served during World War II. Most of the service members honored here died in the Battle of the Atlantic or in the strategic air bombardment of northwest Europe.

Luxembourg American Cemetery was established on Dec. 29, 1944, by the 609th Quartermaster Company of the U.S. Third Army while Allied Forces were stemming the enemy’s desperate Ardennes Offensive, one of the critical battles of World War II. The city of Luxembourg served as headquarters for Gen. George S. Patton’s U.S. Third Army. The cemetery serves as Patton’s   final resting place. It contains the remains of approximately 5,100 service members. Another approximately 400 names are inscribed on its Wall of the Missing. Many of those honored at this site lost their lives in the Battle of the Bulge and in the advance to the Rhine River.

ABMC sites are a constant reminder of Gen. John J. Pershing’s promise that “time will not dim the glory of their deeds.”
