This month, Montsec American Monument located in the natural regional park of Lorraine received two stars in the Guide Michelin Voyage et Cultures, recognizing the American Battle Monuments Commission’s site as an outstanding touristic site to visit.

“It is the second year in a row that we are honored with this award,” said Joseph Alotto, Montsec American Monument superintendent. “We are happy to remain in this guide that enables curious travelers to discover new cultures and sites. Montsec American Monument is more than just a tourist site. It is a place of remembrance that helps discovering the history of the region and the deeds of U.S. service members in the area during World War I.”

Montsec American Monument is located next to the village of Montsec, 20 minutes from St.Mihiel American Cemetery, in Thiaucourt, France. This majestic monument, commemorating the achievements of the American service members who fought in this region in 1917 and 1918, dominates the landscape for miles around. It commemorates the reduction of the St. Mihiel Salient by the U.S. First Army, on Sept.12-16, 1918, and operations of the U.S. Second Army, on Nov. 9-11, 1918. It also honors combat services of other U.S. divisions in this region and in Alsace and Lorraine. Names of nearby villages liberated by American troops are carved upon the outside frieze.

St. Mihiel American Cemetery contains the graves of approximately 4,150 of our military dead. The majority of these died in the offensive that resulted in the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient that threatened Paris.
