Brookwood American Cemetery to participate in Surrey Day 2025 with special tours and family activities

Published April 30, 2025

Surrey Day 2025

American Battle Monuments Commission’s Brookwood American Cemetery will participate in Surrey Day 2025 Saturday, May 10, with a series of special activities designed to engage visitors of all ages and bring to light the impact of World War II on the First World War cemetery.

This year’s Surrey Day theme, “How World War Two Shaped Surrey,” will be explored through a unique, short tour series titled, “Find out what impact the Second World War had on a First World War Cemetery.”

Thematic tours will be offered on the hour, every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. BST, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn how the events of World War II influenced the layout, purpose and legacy of this World War I cemetery.

“This event provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to learn about how both world wars shaped the cemetery and the local area,” said Richard Arseneault, Brookwood American Cemetery superintendent. “We hope to engage families and history enthusiasts and show how this site serves as a bridge between generations.”

Activities for all ages

For families attending Surrey Day, the cemetery’s Junior Guide station will offer interactive, educational activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. BST, encouraging younger visitors to explore the site’s history through activities designed to engage their imaginations. Families can learn about the significance of the cemetery and the stories of the men and women who served in the conflict, all while participating in hands-on experiences that make history come alive.

Visitors are invited to take part in this special day as part of the county-wide celebration, where history, nature and community come together. With an anticipated higher footfall on Surrey Day, the cemetery is expecting a warm reception from the public, making this an ideal event for those looking to connect with both local and international history.
