The American Battle Monuments Commission will commemorate the 81st anniversary of Operation Shingle at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy, Jan. 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. CET, to honor the service and sacrifice of the U.S. armed forces and their allies during World War II at Anzio and Nettuno during the landings.

ABMC is expecting local residents, along with U.S. and Italian dignitaries to pay tribute to the service members honored at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. Students from Istituto Comprensivo Nettuno III will read some letters from U.S. service members commemorated at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, 2nd Lt. Kitty S. Driskell and Staff Sgt. Willis E. Taylor.
Sicily-Rome American Cemetery is the final resting place for approximately 7,900 American military members, most of whom died during the liberation of Sicily, in the landings in the Salerno area and the fighting northward, in the landings at Anzio Beach, and the air and naval support throughout the region. Additionally, more than 3,000 names of those who went missing in these operations are etched in the white marble walls of the cemetery’s chapel.
For more than 100 years, the ABMC has been committed to its mission: honoring the service, achievements and sacrifices of the U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice during American conflicts abroad, including the ones who fought in the landings at Anzio and Nettuno beaches.
